Ambulocetus natans by Viergacht Ambulocetus natans by Viergacht
A walking whale from Pakistan, 50 mya. Most of the restorations show Ambulocetus as a shrinkwrapped otter/crocodile-looking thing - I wanted to put some fleshiness on it. The color is inspired by leopard seals.

Nice, this (unlike the one in Walking with beasts) seems to represent more of an ancient whale than a mammalian crocodile*.

*even if it did behave like one.

Lovely, I too am sick of the otter-crocodile hybrid instead of a beautiful creature all of its own. I also like the leopard seal-inspired patterning.

There's a general trend of "shrink-wrapping" critters in paleoart, but it seems especially weird for an aquatic mammal, because they're all either bulky or fuzzy.

Yeah, but with this mouth they could take you down in the water and drown in a second!!! So maybe we should keep an eye when we vist a river or lake from the Eocene.

Very true, but I want all kinds of unreasonable things as my imaginary pets! ;)

Hehehe, of course! I want to have a Dakotaraptor as a pet but maybe it's too dangerous. But, who cares!!!

It does look good with some blubber on the bones, I loved this critter in Walking With Beasts.

You're righ that they always end up being shrink-wrapped for some reason. I really like this reconstruction, looks very believable :)

I love this! The colours are awesome and the facial "expression" looks amazingly realistic. I especially like how you drew the eye.

Loving that water texture.

I guess I have a soft spot for aquatic predators :D  Really nice depiction.

I have to admit, a majority of the Ambulocetus restorations are pretty ugly looking.

I like how you displayed this one, looks more mammal-like.
