A sketch of a flying, intelligent feline-like hexapod from the amazing mind of Rathacat.

Fun critter to draw! Obviously I like cats and weird critters so this was right up my alley. The small doodles were quickly done with sharpie on copy paper, using James as a model. Oscar posed for the big drawing - that's his favorite sleeping position, minus the wings naturally. Don't have a lot of practise drawing flying things yet.

There hasn't been a lot of description yet, so details may change before it hit the paint stage. Actually this is an adult so it's Click's mother.

Wow, I LOVE THIS! Please, can I Tweet a link to it?

The bat details added to the feline face are wonderful, and I like your idea about the internal beak replacing teeth.

Hi Viergacht,

I'm thinking of doing a more extensive description of Click's parents than I'd originally planned, since people really like Click. I would like to use some of the details in your drawing, such as the ear and nose modifications. Maybe the internal beak idea replacing teeth.

I like the feline hands, too. The only problem is that the creature needs to be able to run on them to take off.
One reason I envisioned the "wing-cats" as a bit cheetah-like is that they would have to attain a fairly high ground-speed to take off from a flat surface. Of course, if they launched from a cliff or tree, your hand-design would work fine.

I wonder if it is possible to design a hand/paw that can be used for both running and manipulation, or maybe that is unrealistic.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I was out of town this weekend.

As for the hands, there are a couple of possible solutions. The hexapods might have started with more bones in their fingers than tetrapods, and could have a more sophisticated version of the retractile finger design. They might have a longer digit that folds up like a jackknife when running and then unfolds into fingers when they sit up.

Another thought would be to give it more digits - perhaps three or four sturdy pawlike toes, and two very small, slender fingers and a thumb on the inside of the paw that fold away into a skin sheath when running. I got that idea from my dad's cat who has 7 toes on her front paws, four normal and a cluster of three little dewclaws, and four normal toes and a dewclaw on her hinders.

I mainly gave it a more primate like hands because I imagined on a jungle island it might do a lot of landing in trees. Patas monkeys are the fastest running primates (35 mph) and they have similar hands. Possibly they could start out on all fours with the wings folded and when they get to a higher speed switch to bounding on the hind limbs and flapping the wings, kind of like how geese get off the water, running on the surface and flapping for a short distance.

Or I can just draw the forepaws more feline, it's up to you :)

I sketched some stranger things, too, such as a head with feathery false ears like a barn owl's, with a feather ruff that could be raised to form a sound-gathering dish.
