Description

This week, a speedpaint of what was probably my all-time favorite werewolves when I was a kid: Eric Cord from the 1987/88 Fox series "Werewolf".

A lot of the design elements I like were cemented by this sucker. It was a huge, hulking beast with a hunched back, a tailless, knuckle-walking, plantigrade quadruped that could rise up on its hind legs for short bursts. Designed by Rick Baker, who is of course best known for "An American Werewolf in London, this wolf has a long, slender muzzle and extremely elongate, almost batlike, ears that actually make it resemble the werewolves from "The Howling". The arm extensions were likely the same he used in his gorilla suits, and the heavy padding gave it a muscular bear/gorilla look. There were actually two suits, the brown furred one was the hero, Eric, and the gray one was Janos Skorzeny, the bad guy who Eric spent the series hunting (making this one of the earliest instances of the "kill the original werewolf to cure your lycanthropy" trope). This wasn't the most expressive werewolf suit ever - its jaws opened and closed but the muzzle was fixed into a perma-snarl, its ears could wriggle a bit - but that was probably a combination of budget and the animatronics needing to be tough enough to stand up rough an tumble stunts on a tight shooting schedule.

A DVD collection of the series - which sadly only lasted one season - was set to come out a few years ago, but apparently got hung up over music issues so you'll just have to suffer with the fuzzy VHS recordings on youtube if you want to watch it.
