Description
They’re based on real prehistoric species like Diatryma, Gastornis and Phorusrhacos, but overall are pretty much my invention. They’re very weird looking creatures and it was hard to make them look threatening and not completely goofy. The one in front is supposed to be a male and the one in back a female; the coloration was inspired by peafowl.
Most people don’t think of peafowl when they think of scary animals, but I used to work at a place that had a trio of them guarding the property. I had to take the unfertilized (and very rotten) egg away from the one peahen, Peek. I was trying not to traumatize her, so tried to do it very stealthily. Nope. She waited til I was distracted and attacked me. Darn near ripped my earlobe off.
Anyways, did I ever mention I hate painting feathers? I haaaaaaaaate painting feathers. That’s why I barely draw dinosaurs any more.
I have an art blog for sketches and WIPs, if you are interested in how these things develop.
